(CN) — A major New Jersey pumpkin grower said Tuesday that a quarantine was “unwarranted” as the state was still awaiting a ruling on a request from Gov. Chris Christie to lift the quarantine. Bear Lake Farm, based in Flemington, New Jersey, said in a statement on its Facebook page that it was “highly unlikely” that pumpkins could be sold before the court ruling, scheduled for Oct. 17, in a last-ditch effort to bring relief to the thousands of farmers and vegetable distributors affected by the quarantine. “Bear Lake has been waiting on this quarantine since it was put in place on July 26 and it’s still unclear as to when the Governor will act on it,” the statement said. The growers and distributors are currently selling pumpkins for their personal consumption only because they say the potential income has been reduced by half since the request was made. “Although Bear Lake Farm’s operation is still ongoing and pumpkins are available for consumers, Bear Lake Farm is disappointed that the ill-advised quarantine has caused so much disruption for the farm community and its employees,” the statement said. “Bear Lake Farm still cannot properly process and store pumpkins for sale in a way that would meet the guidelines required to keep consumers safe, nor can the farm grow more pumpkins for sale. As you can imagine, we cannot accept the very slow rate of pay we’re receiving now,” the statement continued. The statement pointed to the efforts of many farmers and suppliers to keep their operations going, including supplying pumpkins to states as far as California and Alabama, something the state denied on Tuesday.
